We raise a variety of chickens, predominately barn yard mixes. Why buy new birds if you have them replicating themselves constantly. We like to have around 150-300 birds at any given time. Occasionally we will buy new birds to get new genetics in. Currently all of our birds are free range, and almost completely self sufficient. We sell eggs, chicks, and layers. If you participate any chicks, or hens that came from us that end up being a rooster and you paid to be part of the program then we will replace that rooster with a hen of approximately the same age. if THAT is a rooster, then we will continue until you get that hen you deserve
Taj-Ma-Coup
We took some spare parts from high tunnels and made Taj-Ma-Coup. They have a warm place in winter and day forage in a protected pasture. The guardian geese are around for their protection as well as the Livestock Guardian Dogs regularly patrol the area. The get a few eggs each day to make sure they protect the flock. No birds means no eggs. This is just ONE of the poultry palaces that we have on the farm. We have a coup up by the barn/house, we have the Peeper Palace for ducks and geese, mobile tractors, and working on a larger mobile coup to follow the cows and sheep.
Some of the chickens even have names. Typically if you get a name on our farm means you are set for life. Meaning, you are around until you die of natural causes. This isn’t always the case, but holds true in most cases.
Wee did a video a few years back of her morning chores all on her own, and we uploaded it. She has gotten better in her video skills and subjects as she has watched and practiced more.
We needed a better brooder than we had been using We went though several generations before we built the Brooder Boss 4000. It has 4 levels each being 4 ft by 8 ft and each level can be separated into two 4×4 sections. Each section has its own light or heat lamp depending what is needed. Each level has vinyl floor so it makes cleaning super easy. just take a childes garden how and scrape into bucket, bin, or wheelbarrow.
